return to sacred places

drumroll please....

well gentle readers I
just finished the
last piece...
whew!
I am so ready for a break!

this is the entire collection.
three Santos and one hand...
well they are relics after all!

as I mentioned in the last post it was my aim to make "prims"
that were contemporary
but still looked aged and worn...
with a sense of history and sacredness...

a close up of the crown
that I made from a piece of an old lamp...
all the pieces were made with plaster cloth...

"exhaltation"
hand of the saint
10 x18

I adore those antique relics of hands and feet and thought
that it might be interesting to make a large jointed hand
and yes, the fingers still move...
this piece rests in
a box frame that will be open to the wall..
I think it will be beautiful on that adobe wall...
the hand is life size....

"the mended heart"
13 1/2 x 8

for more photos of this piece, please see the last post

"the saint of stitches"

13 x 8

my friend Neva from Opening Connecting sent me this gorgeous lace
that her grandmother made by hand, so I HAD to do something that was fitting
for such a generous gift. I used it to create the dolls dress ...
this piece honors all the needle artists...
as well as friendship between women...

her arms and hands ( in fact all of the dolls are fully jointed and still move)
the cabinet cards were transferred in fabric and stitched to her dress...
all the clothing is antique and hand stitched...
her braids were made using plaster cloth...

"the blessed mother"
8 x 13 1/2 x 4 1/2
this piece sits in a box that hangs on the wall
for me this piece is about the
invisible bond that exists between
mother and child

her halo is an antique slotted spoon
and she nestles sweetly in a box
that hangs on the wall

a portion of the proceeds go to the Haitian Relief Orphanage Program
and if you are interested in these pieces
please email Robert at Two Graces.
or phone him at 575 758-4639
I believe that ALL the dolls are capped in the $350
range to give you an idea of the price, so they can be less, but not more than that price
I think that is just remarkable....

I think there will be around 60 dolls
created by these remarkable artists:
Michelle Marquette, Chris Roberts, Louise Casselman, Del Orr, Rick Phelps
Linda May Jasper Vogel, Erin Rivera Merriman,
Barbara Thomas and Robert Cafazzo.

I will of course blog the show upon return,
but you will be able to view the show on line on Saturday July 17

the mended heart

ciao!
first, let me say that I do not
consider myself a doll maker
by any stretch of the imagination....
I have made dolls before
but never with this detail...

I am finishing the last
two dolls and the santos hand
and I will have photos for you
before I leave for Taos
on thursday morning...

the doll show, Art of the Doll, Return to Sacred Places
opens on friday evening
and this is the
first Santos
in the collection...

I wanted to create
contemporary relics with a sense of history
and age...
I used found objects and antique fabrics on all
of my "saints"

this piece is titled
"the mended heart"
and I wanted the milagros attached to
shreds of her once glorious petticoat
that would have covered the hoop skirt
the heart is made of plaster cloth and the
barb wire is hand made.
all the clothes have been stitched by hand...

I am honored to be invited in this show
not just because it is
but part of the proceeds are going to an orphanage
in Haiti and there is
price limit on
these sculptures
to make them more affordable

I will blog the show and take as many photos
as I can so you can see it...
if you are interested
in this Santos please
go here and
email Robert.

hope you like her...
she is obviously
close to my heart...
now I will get back to work...

c4n!
