Secret Gardens

so, gentle reader...

we took a little detour
on our way back home from Oklahoma
visiting our family...
and stopped
for the afternoon in
New Orleans...

I adored this fence, rusty, thick and chunky Fleurs, what is not to love about that?

it was a destination that I had always wanted to see...

Mr. La Dolce Vita had been there on business and promised to take me one day..
knowing that I am lover of crumbling splendor
and aged places..

Chained shut and definitely overgrown...

of antiques and good food...
it was a perfect little side trip...

I had imagined New Orleans as a
romantic city of French Creole, filigree wrought iron balconies...

and of course there is that, and though I did shoot a few of those...

St. Louis Cathedral  in the French Quarter... spectacular old worlde architecture...

what really captured my curiosity were all the private gardens...
with fountains and lush with exotic plants and flowers...

Charming antique store with a lovely courtyard..

they beckon..
invite, and who can resist the notion
 of a
secret garden?

living inside...
out...

sitting in the sun each morning with a cafe au lait?

Hurricane Katrina left her mark for sure,
but the French Quarter was spared..
not unharmed
but not completely devastated either...
there is a lot of new building and many businesses are
still rebuilding but it is ever gorgeous...

and life will not be stopped...
it squirts from cracks in stones and takes over gardens...

I felt at home there,
the city of Fleur De Lys
in fact I was wearing my fleur charm as we
drove into town...

there were less tourists
since we visited on a weekday..
and the weather was spectacular...

sunny and bright, but the sting removed from the sun
as summer gives way to fall, even here in the south...

and as a tree lover, I was stunned by the size and majesty of the
Live Oaks...
sheltering and far reaching..

but ....dear reader,
the secret gardens won my heart...

they are my one weakness...

wink..

farmers market

ciao, gentle readers...
we have a tiny farmers market here
and we often travel to Ann Arbor for

a much bigger venue...

but I like to support our local farmers

and it is so much fun to bring

such fresh produce home...

not to mention the purchase of
perennials..
and native plants...

we have not been out much lately..
we are busy painting our house and getting ready to put it on the market..

so I have not had any studio time...

but hoping to get back to my work sooon...
doing a lot of painting... but not the good kind...

be back soon

life is short

I have just returned from
Chicago
and although I went to attend an Inurnment
I found time to
spend with my sister, Sue..

she took me to an adorable town
just a few miles away from her home...
which is filled with quaint shops and
restaurants...

and we had a little time to catch up
and just enjoy each other....
so I thought my dear readers might like to go along...

it was a gorgeous, warm and sunny day...
with just a slight cool breeze...

and the gardens were lovely...
with waterfalls and annual beds...

we found a great place to eat and settled in
for a slow lunch...
which is of course my preferred way to eat...

a little pinot noir...

and the view from our table...

the sun overhead...

and everything in bloom...

no matter where you are,
no matter what the reason, or occasion,
I hope you take a beauty break...

preoccupied...

using my journal pages as my rough sketches for
my show pieces has been wonderful...
they are like a silent confidante
holding close my ideas as they mature...

ingredients this month: acrylic paint, antique ephemera, pen, pencil, colored pencil, walnut inks, tissue papers, china marker, paper shred, transfer on papers...

it is so nice to be blogging again
I missed you all..
I will be off to visit your blogs shortly...

let's take a walk

all work and no play
makes cat a dull girl...
so I thought it would
be fun to take you
with me on
my morning walk...

we will start here at La Dolce Vita...
if your last name means lily then you should have lilies right?
and the HOA plants giant pumpkins
every year in this site on the trail close to my house
we had snow last year,
remember and that is why
you did not see photos...

our native grasses are outstanding this year
due to the rains we had...

up the trail...

although it is early in the day,
we won't go up the mountain,
there is lots to do in the studio...

but it is nice to be out in the cool
morning air listening to the bees, the frogs and the bird song...

the color is so gorgeous right now!

don't you love the way this fence curves?
and don't worry we won't go this way...

we're going up the hill,
this tiny photo is Horsetooth Dam...
below

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
John Muir

What I know of the divine sciences and Holy Scriptures, I learned in woods and fields. I have no other masters than the beeches and the oaks.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

I call this stand of trees, the "three sisters" ...
sad to see that one has died last winter
it was a harsh year for trees...

my favorite, the twisted sister is
long dead, but still so beautiful...

Trees are the earth's endless effort to speak to the listening heaven.
Rabindranath Tagore

down the hill...

glad we got an early start
it is a popular hike...

at the trail head..

back home..
back to work
grazie,
cfn!
